154. Mr Grey Will See You Now.

I’m sorry I’ve got to talk about it. Today the full trailer for the 50 Shades of Grey movie was released and well… there’s a lot to say. Viewer discretion advised. Blah blah.

First of all. Release date. Valentine’s Day. Who decided that would be appropriate? The first book in the series is not exactly romantic. And I can’t imagine going to see it as a couple. Both parties would come out feeling hot and bothered, the lady probably fan-girling and the man feeling inadequate.

The trailer revolves around the first meeting between shy student Anastasia Steele and CEO/ kinky sex god/ gazillionaire Christian Grey. We see his office, the infamous elevator kiss (what is about elevators?!), Charlie Tango the helicopter, brooding Christian playing the piano and Christian the Dom in those jeans. Meanwhile Ana spends most of the trailer breathing heavily, staring at Christian and asking him to ‘enlighten her’. Pretty faithful to the books.

As for the actors. There was so much fuss around who should play Christian Grey. Fan favourites were Matt Bomer and Ian Somerhalder but in the end they went with Calvin Klein model Jamie Dornan. Everyone envisions Christian Grey to their own tastes but personally I have no qualms about Dornan in the looks department. The man is hella distracting in a very very good way. I wish they kept his beard in the film.

Dat hair. Dat beard. Dat face. Dat jawline.

However Christian’s appeal is in his domineering attitude and the fact that he knows exactly what he wants and how to get it.  I wasn’t seeing this quality in the trailer but who knows? I also felt like the sound of his voice wasn’t ‘hot’ enough.

Prior to the trailer I wasn’t convinced that Dakota Johnson was right as Ana mainly because I’d envisioned Alexis Bledel. However I think her portrayal of a quiet, innocent girl who was overwhelmed by Christian and afraid of how he made her feel hit the mark.

The secondary characters basically got zero screen time though we do catch a glimpse of Taylor and the Grey family. However Ana’s best friend Kate and the infamous Mrs Robinson are notably absent.

Overall I’d say I was mildly impressed but mainly because I had such low expectations. I’m not sure how the more graphic scenes are going to play out or if it’s even possible to do them tastefully. How far are they going to go? I hope they leave a little to the imagination because I really don’t want to see everythang.

Except in my mind’s eye. That’s okay.

Over and Out! Laters baby!

76. Crying over the love of you

The Great Gatsby. It’s being advertised like crazy and the cast list boasts of the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan and Tobey Maguire. On top of that it has one hell of a soundtrack. They managed to get friggin Jay Z as the executive producer who is probably one of the most well connected rappers in the game.

Songs off the soundtrack:

Florence and the Machine- Over the Love

This is one of the best songs I have heard in a long long while. It’s classic Florence- starts off soft and slow, melodious catchy chorus and above all a powerful vocal. Gosh some of her high notes in this are impressive but it’s the end of the song that totally won me.

AND I SING FROM THE PIANOOO

Lana Del Ray- Young and Beautiful

For me, Lana is the queen of wistful melancholy songs. Her voice has so much depth and this song is beautiful. There’s a kind of innocence in the way she asks ‘will you still love me when I’m no longer young and beautiful?’. Yes Lana, I will still love you.

Sia- Kill and Run

Sia has a very distinctive voice and she showcases it in this song but I dunno it feels a little too slow for too long and the big dramatic part of the song is nowhere near as powerful as Florence’s or Lana’s. Perhaps it will sound better when it’s used in context with the movie.

Beyonce and Andre 3000- Back to Black

Can’t have Jay Z without Beyonce getting involved somehow… But anyway this is the second time Queen B and Andre 3000 have paired up; the first being for Beyonce’s song ‘Party’ which I didn’t think was anything special so I was hoping for something better this time. However ‘Back to Black’ is Amy Winehouse’s song and I was skeptical that anyone would be able to convey the heartbreak quite like she did. So unsurprisingly this song came up short. Instrumentally it’s good but vocally, it just feels… off… too many vocal acrobatics from Beyonce and bizarre singing/talking from Andre 3000.

As for the film itself, it looks really good. I have high expectations! Leonardo DiCaprio better get an Oscar for this- it’s about time.

Over and Out!

61. Liebster Award

I like to call the Liebster Award the ‘pass the parcel’ award which draws attention to ‘up and coming’ blogs. Once you’re nominated you need to reveal 11 facts abut yourself, answer 11 questions from the person who nominated you, nominate another 11 blogs and then pose them 11 questions. Answering  11 Questions

Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?

In the mirror. I kid. I kid. Career wise I hope to be an associate actuarist working in Central London living…comfortably. Personal life wise, I hope I’m happily married and a good mummy!

What is your dream career?

My dream career would involve mathematics, computers and people. I’m going down the actuary route for now and if I’m right about what the job entails, it should involve all of that.

What does you dream home look like?

My dream home would be anywhere my family is but if you’re talking aesthetics…I’d love a home with a great view, a library, a balcony, a mini cinema and a jacuzzi.

What’s your favourite car?

My favourite car is actually the Mini Cooper. The Italian Job totally sold it to me. I like that it’s compact, appropriate for daily life and looks good. I want to get a green one with white stripes when I can afford one.

 Do you play any sports?

I’m not very sporty at all but I enjoy playing badminton, rounders and dodgeball! I’m not good at any of them. I just think they’re fun!

Who is the most inspirational person in your life?

This is going to sound horribly cliche but I have to choose my mother. She is the bravest, cutest, squishiest, most dependable person I know. She is my moral compass and my walking, breathing diary. She keeps me moving forward and she makes me a better person. I love her to bits.

Who is you favourite band/singer etc?

I listen to all sorts of music and have a lot of love for everyone from Lana del Ray to Rihanna to Paramore but my favourite artist has to be Beyonce. I love that she stands up for women and she is such a brilliant performer. I can rely on Beyonce to cheer me up when I’m down and to get me on the dancefloor when I want to party. Oh and she’s sexy as hell!

What subject interests you the most?

Mathematics. In particular I like group theory and statistics. I love that there’s lots of ways to approach the same problem and still get to the same solution. I love that it’s based on logic and reasoning. And even though I complain about it, I love that it teaches me to think.

Do you like to travel? If so, state where’s the best place you’ve been and why.

I wouldn’t say it’s my favourite place but I had the best time in Egypt with JK for my travel scholarship. We had days where we just walked around Cairo taking it all in, days where we focussed on learning about Egypt’s immense history and days we spent on a felucca cut off from the world just floating down the Nile. Wonderful, wonderful experience. I hope to travel some more after my degree.

egypt camel

Do you have lots of casual friends or few very close friends?

I have always had a small circle of very close friends. I like having a select bunch of people that I can depend upon and similarly it allows me to really get to know them.

If you’d go back in time and change something, or do something, what would it be?

I’d really like to go back in time and meet both of my grandmothers. Both of them passed away before I was born. I have heard such wonderful things about them from my parents. I would have loved to have known them.

What is your favourite food?

My mum’s aloo gosht  (lamb and potato curry) is to die for! In terms of dessert, I’m a huge fan of Pizza Hut’s chocolate hot cookie dough. Om nom nom nom.

33. Lovey Dovey

Hello peoples!

I had great fun ‘researching’ songs for this post but it’s been more challenging than I anticipated. One of the biggest has been finding songs that are completely happy- most love songs have a bittersweet sort of ‘I’ll wait forever if I have to’ feel to them whilst others are more dancey than lovey dovey. With that said, here is my resulting list:

  • I actually think this is such a beautiful song and Beyonce just kills it (in a very good way) with her vocal acrobatics. This performance in particular is so passionate; Beyonce actually looks like she’s going to cry in the chorus. Queen B!

Beyonce – Halo

Hit me like a ray of sun
Burning through my darkest night
You’re the only one that I want
Think I’m addicted to your light
I swore I’d never fall again
But this don’t even feel like falling

  • In my opinion, Taylor Swift is the queen of cutesy love songs. Say what you want about her volatile love life, it has certainly led to some great songs. I’ve chosen ‘Enchanted’ here but there are half a dozen I could have picked including ‘I’d Lie’ and ‘Today Was A Fairytale’. Enchanted builds up so well. The soft guitar strumming turns into a full blown crescendo of guitar, drums and violins that sort of makes me want to spread my arms out and go all Titanic by the end.

Taylor Swift – Enchanted

This night is sparkling, don’t you let it go
I’m wonderstruck, blushing all the way home
I’ll spend forever wondering if you knew
I was enchanted to meet you

(Okay I know this has the whole ‘I’ll wait forever’-ness to it but I like it too much to kick it out of the list)

  • When I was much younger, my family were huge Shania Twain fans. We used to listen to her album on pretty much every road trip so this song reminds me of all those times and as a love song, it’s pretty neat. You might want to ignore the first 30 seconds- I find it pretty cringey but it definitely picks up afterwards.

Shania Twain – You’re Still The One

They said, “I bet they’ll never make it”
But just look at us holding on
We’re still together still going strong

(You’re still the one)
You’re still the one I run to
The one that I belong to
You’re still the one I want for life

  • Next I have a song from One Direction. Before you start rolling your eyes, I say stop and just have a listen. Close your eyes and forget it’s these teeny boppers singing and then judge. Or keep your eyes open and drool over buffting Zayn Malik (another potential Perv Post candidate). Your choice.

One Direction – Little Things

I know you’ve never loved
The sound of your voice on tape
You never want
To know how much you weigh
You still have to squeeze into your jeans
But you’re perfect to me

I won’t let these little things slip out of my mouth
But if it’s true
It’s you,
It’s you they add up to
I’m in love with you
And all these little things

  • This one is a complete cheesefest but it’s special to me. Don’t laugh! You know you’ve got it bad when these kind of songs start sounding good!

Nicole Scherzinger – Baby Love

And I don’t ever wanna be with no one else
You’re the only one that ever made me melt
You’re special, boy it’s your, your style
We so in love

  • There’s are so many kinds of love and this particular song is an ode to BROMANCEEEE! Nigahiga is a genius- he’s not the most subscribed person on YouTube for nothing! This song is so catchy; the lyrics are hilarious and the video cracks me up.

Nigahiga and Chester See- Bromance

It’s like Eminem and Dr. Dre
If I loved you more I might be gay
And when I’m feeling down
You know just what to say
You my homie, yeah you know me
And if you ever need a wingman
I’d let any girl blow me off
Cause you’re more important than the rest
I confess, I’m a mess
If I’m not hanging with my BFF

  • Call me  a fresh pot but I love me a good Indian love song. I’m a complete saddo- I like to collect songs at the weddings I attend and the one I’m about to share with you is a wedding staple. You’d think that might make it overused or that I’d be tired of hearing it by now but I’d gladly listen to it another 100 times. Suraj Hua Madham was also a close contender but I felt like the video was a bit too steamy to share.

Tujh Mein Rab Dikhta Hai from the film Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

Tu Hi Toh Jannat Meri
(You are my paradise)
Tu Hi Mera Junoon
(You’re my obsession (in a non stalker way))
Tu Hi Toh Mannat Meri
(You’re all my wishes put together)
Tu Hi Rooh Ka Sukoon
(You ease my spirit)

  • I’d like to end with a song for sexy time. Now I appear to have a capacity for erm naughty songs but I understand this might not be everyone’s cup of tea (or you pretend it’s not) hence I’ve chosen an understated song. If you don’t think this is understated, you ain’t heard nothing yet.

Mike Posner- Bow Chicka Wow Wow

You’ve been playin’ hard to get with me all night
We both know exactly what you want right
Don’t tell me what you won’t do
Tell me whatchu gon’ do, whatchu gon’ do

Once I throw on this bow chicka wow wow
Whatchu gonna say
You act like you gon’ leave
But I know that you gon’ stay

And there you have it! Over and Out!

P.S To the person who tried searching for this blog via ‘gay people who wear onesies’, “Threemagical” is much shorter to type and it’s the first result. Just sayin’.
