155. Types of People You See On the Dancefloor at an Indian Wedding

The Closet Professional

These people have to be physically dragged onto the dancefloor but once they get there, they’re busting out moves you’ve never seen before and they’re bruk-bruk-brukking it down like no tomorrow.

The Girls Standing in a Circle doing ‘Tali’

You know what I mean. Shuffle around and do the customary clap in front of you and behind your shoulder. Basically the brown version of ring a ring a roses.

The Bhangra Champions

I swear at every party, there’s a duo of Punjabi guys hitting such fierce moves that it makes your thighs hurt just watching them. Balle balle my friends.

The Uncle

Towards the end of the night, Coca Cola and/or alcohol lead to over confident uncles dancing the dances from three decades ago. I’m talking moonwalk, night fever, the standing-on-your-toes Jackson style and randomness.

Luna Lovegood

That one person in the corner who’s just doing their own thang oblivious to everyone else.

The one that wants to dance but isn’t allowed to

Sometimes people are forced to contain their enthusiasm in case they dishonour the family name with booty shaking. Doesn’t stop them trying though.

The kids

Their dancing basically consists of jumping up and down with their arms in the air.

The Non-Indian People

Usually looking mildly uncomfortable and attempting to do the one hand on hip, other hand doing the lightbulb. They start getting really excited when a Western song comes on, only to realise it’s a Bhangra remix. Sorry guys.

The bride and groom

Ahh the awkward First dance. Here several things are observed. The couple maintain a safe distance apart. His hands are super glued to her side, no wandering allowed! And of course the mandatory sway/ shuffle. All the while the aunties look on tutting.

Over and Out!

135. A Snapshot Of My Year

I had my 21st birthday in January and my friends bought me a onesie.

mybirthday

Does it look like they’re struggling with my weight? 😛

We had snow and everyone realised that I have terrible aim.

Asking for mercy.

James had a big birthday bash and I had a blast.

Sh-Shake it like a polaroid picture!

I completed numerous puzzles weekly with James and Shakira. This is one of my favourites.

HAIII SONIC

The whiteboard in the Maths Common Room at Imperial is always full of interesting doodles. One week someone decided to write out some Maths terms phonetically. 10 Cool Points for anyone who tries to decipher these (Shakira and James are excluded).

You don’t need to be a mathematician to get some of these.

Ahhh revision time for third year exams. Can’t say I enjoyed this but it turned out okay.

IMG-20130328-00429

RIP my beloved headphones. You served me well.

Celebrating the end of exams in style.

Magic.

Driving to Gatwick at 5am and I saw a rainbow as the sun rose. A moment of peace.

This picture really doesn’t do it justice. God dammit bad quality Blackberry camera!

A serene afternoon.

Dad meets swan. Hi Dad, I’m swan.

I rarely go to arcades but one day me and my cousins literally spent all evening there. I have a weakness for car racing games!

IMG-20130627-01038

I lost badly every time.

I completed an internship with Towers Watson and they decided to hire me. That’s been huge for me.

Outside the office.

I might be 21 but that says nothing about my maturity. Me and James in Canary Wharf.

IMG-20130730-01160

SWAG.

Learnt how addictive Roulette is at Towers Watson boat party. We floated down the Thames and whatever its faults, there really is something special about London.

IMG-20130717-01128

I attended my cousin’s wedding in Paris. I took the Eurostar for the first time.

The world is getting smaller.

I swear every photo, it looks like I have one foot.

Eid with my family (this is just a handful of us).

IMG-20130811-WA002

I got these for Eid- can’t think of a better present for a Harry Potter fan girl!

IMG-20130815-01261

LOVED Tales of Beedle the Bard. Even his name is epic. BEEDLE.

We went to Ruislip Lido in the Summer. Clearly we weren’t the only ones who had that idea.

IMG-20130714-01106

You’d think it was a beach.

I went to Go Ape which is basically an adventure playground for adults. Kinda perfect for me! The Tarzan leap was my favourite- that rush of adrenaline you feel when you jump of the edge!

goape

Treetop adventure 🙂

Fresher’s Fair marked the return of university for my final year after an eventful Summer.

The Christmas lights on Oxford street.

IMG-20131124-01526

The pretty lights make you forget how cold it is.

Attending my final Imperial’s Math Soc Christmas Dinner. The highlight was dancing like a complete idiot to some god awful songs with James. Boy! What a workout.

aliyamathssoc

Shame about the food though.

And there you have it. Here’s to a bright 2014.

Merry Christmas y’all.

Over and Out!

121. This mah jam.

That moment when your favourite song comes on…

So cute! This little lady is gonna be a rave on the dance floor when she gets older!

Over and Out.

104. Excuse my French but I’m in France

I’M JUST SAYIN’

This is what I should have posted several days ago but better late than never eh. So as I’ve banged on and on about, I went to Paris this weekend for my cousin’s wedding. SO much happened even within a short amount of time but these were some of the high/low lights:

Travelling
The train station was an hour and a half away from the house we were staying at and the house was another hour away from the venue. Who came up with this fabulous planning?- I don’t know- but my god did we do a lot of driving. It was really annoying too because it was so hot in the car that our make up was melting.

The House
I have family all of the world, literally at least one representative from every continent attended this wedding and we were ALL, yes ALL, housed in this one place. It was absolutely stunning, a huge paradise in the middle of nowhere but it still only had 5 bedrooms and there were 31 of us. Yeah you can imagine that not many of us slept on beds. What’s worse was that there were only 3 bathrooms so goodbye privacy. People were hiding behind beds and doors when they were changing but eventually we all just gave up. Trust me when I say that I have seen enough aunty’s stomachs for a lifetime.

Drama
If you know anything about asian weddings, you know that they can’t happen without some drama. This occasion was no exception. My Khala aka. my mum’s sister and bride’s mother is a very emotional person and when the Nikkah (the closest to vows Muslims get) finished, she promptly passed out and I was the idiot who had to run to the guy’s section and get help. Then the crying commenced. It was like a chain reaction. The bride started weeping, and then her sister started which set my mum off and next thing I know my own eyes were wet.

The Rush
There were three events in two days and I was there for two nights. Everything was rushed. As soon as I arrived (literally as soon as I got my foot in the door), I was told to get ready and change my clothes but I was knackered and couldn’t be asked so I just stayed in my jeans. I eventually got the energy to change for the second event but I wore no make up. I sorted things out for the third though.
For the journey home, I caught a very early train back to London and because of the timings and distance from the venue, I actually didn’t sleep for 26 hours. It’s always been on my list of things to do before I die to pull an all nighter but I never thought it would be under those circumstances…

Language Problems
There were many. I speak English, understand Urdu but speak it to a below average standard whereas the rest of them are fluent in French and speak better Urdu than me. Basically there were three languages flying around the whole time and it got hella confusing.

Heels
I fucking hate heels. I wore them for two days straight and it murdered my feet. I genuinely limped home. Don’t do it!

Dancing
In case you don’t know, I love to dance… in private. I’m absolutely terrible but I enjoy practising my balle balle and Beyonce booty shake… in private…because you know I’m brown and dancing unashamedly would ruin my reputation. Now at any other wedding I would never be expected to dance. Come a family member’s wedding however and suddenly my mum is actively telling me to join in. Great! I’m sorry but I am not a closet professional dancer. Let me eat my biryani in peace.

I know this all sounds like a huge rant but it was a wonderful experience really. My cousin looked beautiful (though she won’t let me put up any pics of her yet -_-) and it was amazing to be part of such a Punjabi energetic wedding.

Without further ado, here are some pictures. More may be added later.

Over and Out!

Note: If you live under a rock and don’t understand the title and first line, it’s from ‘Ninjas’ in Paris.

73. BRAPPP

Wooooo! James got a call confirming he’s got an internship. Yay for smacking interviews first time. Killed it my friend! Very proud!

So we decided to celebrate!

We were intrigued by Drake’s…interesting dancing (can you call it that?) in his ‘Started from the Bottom’ music video and me and James attempted to copy it. Hilarity ensued.

STARTED FROM THE BOTTOM NOW WE HERE. STARTED FROM THE BOTTOM, NOW MY WHOLE TEAM HEREE!

I WEAR EVERY SINGLE CHAIN EVEN WHEN I’M IN THE HOUSE.

As far as songs go, it’s pretty poor but my god is it catchy. As soon as it comes on, I find myself walking with a gangsta limp. All I need now are some chains and an obnoxiously large cap.

Peace Out Y’all!

34. My Valentine’s Confession

I guess you could call him a family friend.

Him and his parents have been coming around my house since I was very young. My dad has always been very close to them but my mum finds his family too loud and ‘unpolished’. She says they give her a headache. What about me you might ask? Me and him, we just click. I can’t explain it. It’s like I don’t even have to speak and he knows exactly how I’m feeling. Whenever I need him, he’s there for me, saying the all words I need to hear.

It’s been so long now that I can’t believe I used to keep him secret. I wasn’t sure what my parents would think of ‘us’. Whenever he came to my room, we had to be really quiet especially when things heated up. Even though I don’t see him very much, we’re always talking online or on the phone. In fact since I met him, he’s always been in my life. I might have liked other guys but he’s always been there in the background. I’m always mentioning him and sometimes the boys I was with didn’t understand and didn’t like him but I could never let him go.

I remember the first time I danced with him. He made me feel so alive and free and just deliriously happy. Sometimes he shouts at me but it’s only when I mess up and I think I need it. I need him to motivate me. It helps me pace my life. So this is my thank you. I know that in years to come, he will still be there to support me and guide me and cheer me up. It’s just a shame that I have to share him with millions of people…. But I don’t know what I would do if I were to lose him…because the man that I’m in love with is music.

PLEASE TELL ME I GOT SOME OF YOU… even if it was just for a second!
