166. I love complicated

A movie called Kill Your Darlings was recently brought to my attention; it’s about some poets breaking free of literary tradition. Not the kind of film I usually go for. I would have probably passed it by had it not starred Daniel Radcliffe. I watched the trailer and then it suddenly became glaringly obviously why Drarry fans everywhere were jumping up and down with excitement.

Dane Dehaan (you may know him as Harry Osbourne from ‘The Amazing Spiderman’) plays Lucien Carr, a blonde guy with bright blue eyes. I wouldn’t describe him as traditionally handsome but the character is magnetic and vulnerable in a way that makes everyone fall in love with him. He is basically the Draco Malfoy described in fandom. The fact that his name in the movie is Lucien which sounds so much like Lucius is not lost on me either.

He is perfect in this movie. He is addictive and challenging and open and closed all at once. ‘I knew you were trouble when you walked in’ should be his anthem.

And he has so much chemistry with Daniel Radcliffe. There are some incredibly tender moments, uncomfortable moments (one scene in particular has scarred me for life) and some scenes that had me reaching for ice water. Yes I’m talking about eye sex in the library. Hot damn.

So thank you Dane Dehaan for making my inner fangirl’s dreams come true!

This gif is very distracting.

135. A Snapshot Of My Year

I had my 21st birthday in January and my friends bought me a onesie.

mybirthday

Does it look like they’re struggling with my weight? 😛

We had snow and everyone realised that I have terrible aim.

Asking for mercy.

James had a big birthday bash and I had a blast.

Sh-Shake it like a polaroid picture!

I completed numerous puzzles weekly with James and Shakira. This is one of my favourites.

HAIII SONIC

The whiteboard in the Maths Common Room at Imperial is always full of interesting doodles. One week someone decided to write out some Maths terms phonetically. 10 Cool Points for anyone who tries to decipher these (Shakira and James are excluded).

You don’t need to be a mathematician to get some of these.

Ahhh revision time for third year exams. Can’t say I enjoyed this but it turned out okay.

RIP my beloved headphones. You served me well.

I lost badly every time.

I completed an internship with Towers Watson and they decided to hire me. That’s been huge for me.

LOVED Tales of Beedle the Bard. Even his name is epic. BEEDLE.

We went to Ruislip Lido in the Summer. Clearly we weren’t the only ones who had that idea.

You’d think it was a beach.

I went to Go Ape which is basically an adventure playground for adults. Kinda perfect for me! The Tarzan leap was my favourite- that rush of adrenaline you feel when you jump of the edge!

Treetop adventure 🙂

Fresher’s Fair marked the return of university for my final year after an eventful Summer.

Shame about the food though.

And there you have it. Here’s to a bright 2014.

Merry Christmas y’all.

115. 20 things I wish I knew before I started my internship

1. Keep a pen and notepad with you at all times. You never know when someone will give you something to do.

2. If you’re stuck on something, give it a decent attempt. If you’re still struggling, note down your questions precisely as well as what you’ve already tried so you don’t have to keep pestering people.

3. Note down the names of people you’ve met eg Harry Potter and a memorable trait eg. lightning bolt scar. You don’t want to go through the awkward ‘erm what’s your name again’ conversation.

4. Respond to emails quickly. Often people are waiting for your response before they can move forward. Don’t keep them waiting too long.

5. Put your email sign off eg. Kind regards in your email signature. You will get tired of typing it.

6. Constantly inform people what you are doing. They like reassurance that you haven’t forgotten about their work. In fact you shouldn’t be alarmed if you spend more time informing people of this than actually working.

7. Always make a note of where you found any facts and figures. You will cry if they ask you to find it later and you’ve forgotten.

8. Implement checks in your work wherever possible. This will prevent follow through mistakes which are annoying to fix.

9. Say ‘yes’ to any work given to as long as you have enough time to do it… and even if you don’t. You’ll be surprised how much you can reshuffle to make time.

10. Make a comprehensive list of your tasks and how long you think they’ll take. But also keep a Post-It of immediate tasks in your direct eye line so you are constantly aware of what needs to be done.

11. People care a lot about the appearance of documents so make it look pretty. I got commended in my final review for adjusting the line spacing so that everything fit neatly onto one page.  Such a minor detail and it got noticed. Thank you OCD.

12. Ask people questions. It makes them feel knowledgeable so do so even if you know the answer. If you’re feeling brave, subtly mention the answer and they’ll think you’re clever.

13. Facebook stalk other people in the office and find out what they’re interested in. You’ll find it easier to talk to them.

14. If you can think of a better way of doing something, discuss it with the person who gave you the job. DON’T just jump into it. Some people are surprisingly touchy if you drift even a little from their instructions.

15. Wherever possible, get feedback on any work you’ve done. It’s a good way to learn and get more work as well building a rapport through the correspondence.

16. If you have the option to speak to someone rather than email them about something important, speak to them. Things are far less ambiguous when you talk directly.

17. Take regular breaks and stretch your legs. It’s good for your concentration. This doesn’t mean you’re wasting your time. Do the coffee round or plan your lunch and meetings in such a way that you’re not at your desk for hours and hours.

18. Food is the best way to butter up your colleagues. Cake always goes down a treat, especially if it’s homemade.

19. Do not let people get away with giving vague instructions. Pester them if you have to. It will save you a lot of time in the long run.

20. It’s always better to ask for help than to struggle in vain.

98. What kind of reader are you?

The Devourer

This person doesn’t read books, they devour them! Hunger Games trilogy- yeah read it in 3 days. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix- read it one day. They are hellbent on finishing their book as soon as possible…
Goes to the bathroom, takes book with them. Sitting at the dinner table, takes book with them. Meeting friends? Not anymore! Cancels and reads book instead.
For that day, they are completely and utterly immersed into another world.

My Harry Potter Experience

The Slow Coach

This person is still reading the same book 6 months on, reading approximately 5 pages a day and justifying it with ‘oh the plot is super complex and there are lots of characters’. Seriously I could hand write the book in that time…

The Organised One

This reader sets a guideline ie. they decide to read between 30-50 pages each days and actually stick to it! They pace themselves and take time to savour the details.

The Commuter

They guys are always reading on the bus/train making sure all the other passengers can see how well they are using their time and looking down upon the peasants reading the Metro. That is of course unless they’re reading 50 Shades of Grey in which case they’ll replace the book cover or hide behind their Kindle. You need not have bothered- your dilated eyes and panting give you away…

The Literature Hipster

Not content with what the ‘average’ folk read, they insist on reading things like the Iliad or something in Latin. More importantly they must inform everyone what they’re reading and occasionally quote it to really dig it in. You think you’re well read- I get it. Now shut up and let me read Twilight in peace.

The ‘oh whoops spoiled it’

This happens for books that are part of a series. This person reads the first one, is desperate to know what happens next, wiki’s it (or watches the TV series) and then decides that they don’t need to read the rest of the books because they now know how it ends. Well done.

The Later Later

Gets the book, leaves on desk for 3 months, renews it 10 times and eventually returns the book having never opened it.

The Pretender

Reading the spark notes version does not count as having read the book no matter how well you know the ‘themes’ and ‘symbolism’. Cheater!

Guilty!

Illiterate

What’s a book? These idiots can’t read nothing unless it’s in chat-speak or all gangster like. Yeh sik blad. Safe safe.
Let me know when you get a job.

62. This makes my blood boil.

So Aliya, you’re next! *wink*. Aliya, when are you getting hitched? Hey Aliya, have you thought about your wedding? You know what, I got asked all of these questions today and it’s not the first time. I keep getting asked these questions, particularly since I hit 21. It is just relentless.

Of course I want to get married, of course I want a family but I want to finish my degree first. Every time I say that, some of the aunties give me this look of disdain… oh you’re one of those ‘career minded’ women. They say it like it’s a dirty word. I’m sorry I actually want to use the education I worked so hard to get. I am sorry my ambition isn’t solely linked to finding a husband. Today an aunty said to me, haw you’re 21 and you can’t even make kheer (Indian dessert). Fine, it’s true. I can’t make kheer off the top of my head but I can prove S5 is an insoluble group and if I can do that, I sure as hell can follow a recipe and make some bloody kheer. Do you notice how the reverse argument doesn’t hold? Being able to make kheer doesn’t mean you can prove S5 is an insoluble group. But did I say that? No- because aunties get a free pass to be condescending but any retaliation from me makes me a ‘gustaak larki’ (ill mannered girl).

My mum is like the community agony aunt and being her daughter, I have heard all sorts of stuff about marriage problems and I have learnt a lot. I’mma speak some hard truths today because I am supremely pissed off. If you are a woman and you work, your marriage will be fairer. You know why? Because you put money on the table and guys might not respect you but they sure as hell respect money. There, I said it. If you don’t work, you can bet that when you go shopping, for every two things you put in the trolley, he will take one thing out and justify it with ‘but I pay the bills’. He won’t do that if you’re paying.

You know what aunties… I’mma get a real good job, buy a nice house and a nice car and if I want to buy new shoes, I’mma buy them because I can afford it.

Disclaimer: If this sounds like man hate, I apologise. If you are offended at my generalising, I apologise. I know there are exceptions to every rule but everything I’ve mentioned, I’ve observed firsthand. If you haven’t, then you’re very lucky.

Over and Out.

8. Drarry

I finished reading a fic (short for fiction story) last night and I thought I’d share my love of Harry Potter fandom.

After the last Harry Potter book came out, I felt like there was a void in my life. Sounds ridiculous but I was such a huge fan and everything just felt… over. Thankfully I wasn’t the only one. I stumbled across the fanfiction section of Mugglenet and discovered websites such as FictionAlley where people had posted stories revolving around the characters in Harry Potter.  There were stories that filled in the gap post Voldemort’s defeat, stories that ignored the whole Horcrux hunt, some which focused on  the Marauders… Anything you can possibly think of has probably been done. Think of the strangest character pairing possible. I bet someone’s already written a fic about it.  I was hooked.

I’m slightly ashamed to admit the first fics I read were Harry/Hermione. I believe Hermione and Ron are meant to be but Harry and Ginny just felt too ‘convenient’ so maybe I was just trying to find a partner for Harry. Eventually I got bored and moved onto Hermione/Draco which is a fascinating relationship. It’s a classic goody two shoes meets bad boy. My biggest realisation however was how wonderful and versatile Draco’s character was. I later moved onto Draco/Ginny before settling on… Draco/ Harry. I haven’t looked back since.

When I first bring up the idea of Draco/Harry (ie. Drarry), most people just look a bit disgusted. The more you read however, the more it makes sense. They are really not that different. Both of them are weighed down by heavy expectations and they are both headstrong leaders of their respective Houses. More importantly however, they get under each other’s skin. Nobody riles up Harry like Draco, not even Voldemort. When Voldemort attacks Harry, Harry tries to take the moral high ground and always acts in defense. When Draco’s around, Harry fights. There is such a fine line between love and hate that in my eyes, Harry and Draco are completely viable.

I have read so many Drarry fics that I almost have my own version of Draco. In my head, he is wonderfully witty and sarcastic, powerful, influential, fiercely loyal to his family and addicted to coffee.  Even the Draco in the books is fantastically complicated once you look past the sneering and body guards. Jason Isaacs (actor who plays Lucius Malfoy) said in an interview:

Because in many ways, to me, Draco is the hero of the whole saga. I think Harry has his destiny. There is only one choice Harry can make in every situation. Harry makes the right choice always, and he’s admirable for doing so. But Draco has a bunch of choices, and Draco has to break the bonds of the shackles of his past. He has to break the chain of this kind of abuse and hatred and selfishness and entitlement that his father has been part of, and probably his grandfather and stretching back for generations. And so I saw my job as trying to illustrate how you end up with a kid as messed up as Draco. In “Chamber of Secrets,” I just tried to bully him as much as I could, and be as unloving as I could. And in every opportunity, I wanted to be the kind of father that was so selfish and so egotistical and narcissistic that I would happily sacrifice my son and/or my relationship with him for status. So that was the main point, was to try and explain Draco and make his decision that much more heroic, to try and do the right thing.

Some of the fics out there are really good. They could give JKR a run for her money. Cassandra Claire’s Draco Trilogy is just superb and should be published in its own right. My favourite Drarry author however is Cinnamon. Her stories just stay with you forever. ‘Beautiful World’ and ‘Windfallen’ absolutely killed me- I was depressed for days. You only feel like that when the writing is so good, it feels real.

Then of course, there’s the fan art. Here are some of my favourites! (It’s an excuse to use WordPress’ gallery function too!)
