135. A Snapshot Of My Year

I had my 21st birthday in January and my friends bought me a onesie.

Does it look like they’re struggling with my weight? 😛

We had snow and everyone realised that I have terrible aim.

Asking for mercy.

James had a big birthday bash and I had a blast.

Sh-Shake it like a polaroid picture!

I completed numerous puzzles weekly with James and Shakira. This is one of my favourites.

HAIII SONIC

The whiteboard in the Maths Common Room at Imperial is always full of interesting doodles. One week someone decided to write out some Maths terms phonetically. 10 Cool Points for anyone who tries to decipher these (Shakira and James are excluded).

You don’t need to be a mathematician to get some of these.

Ahhh revision time for third year exams. Can’t say I enjoyed this but it turned out okay.

RIP my beloved headphones. You served me well.

Celebrating the end of exams in style.

Magic.

Driving to Gatwick at 5am and I saw a rainbow as the sun rose. A moment of peace.

This picture really doesn’t do it justice. God dammit bad quality Blackberry camera!

A serene afternoon.

Dad meets swan. Hi Dad, I’m swan.

I rarely go to arcades but one day me and my cousins literally spent all evening there. I have a weakness for car racing games!

I lost badly every time.

I completed an internship with Towers Watson and they decided to hire me. That’s been huge for me.

Outside the office.

I might be 21 but that says nothing about my maturity. Me and James in Canary Wharf.

SWAG.

Learnt how addictive Roulette is at Towers Watson boat party. We floated down the Thames and whatever its faults, there really is something special about London.

I got these for Eid- can’t think of a better present for a Harry Potter fan girl!

LOVED Tales of Beedle the Bard. Even his name is epic. BEEDLE.

We went to Ruislip Lido in the Summer. Clearly we weren’t the only ones who had that idea.

You’d think it was a beach.

I went to Go Ape which is basically an adventure playground for adults. Kinda perfect for me! The Tarzan leap was my favourite- that rush of adrenaline you feel when you jump of the edge!

Treetop adventure 🙂

Fresher’s Fair marked the return of university for my final year after an eventful Summer.

The pretty lights make you forget how cold it is.

Attending my final Imperial’s Math Soc Christmas Dinner. The highlight was dancing like a complete idiot to some god awful songs with James. Boy! What a workout.

Shame about the food though.

And there you have it. Here’s to a bright 2014.

Merry Christmas y’all.

104. Excuse my French but I’m in France

I’M JUST SAYIN’

This is what I should have posted several days ago but better late than never eh. So as I’ve banged on and on about, I went to Paris this weekend for my cousin’s wedding. SO much happened even within a short amount of time but these were some of the high/low lights:

Travelling
The train station was an hour and a half away from the house we were staying at and the house was another hour away from the venue. Who came up with this fabulous planning?- I don’t know- but my god did we do a lot of driving. It was really annoying too because it was so hot in the car that our make up was melting.

The House
I have family all of the world, literally at least one representative from every continent attended this wedding and we were ALL, yes ALL, housed in this one place. It was absolutely stunning, a huge paradise in the middle of nowhere but it still only had 5 bedrooms and there were 31 of us. Yeah you can imagine that not many of us slept on beds. What’s worse was that there were only 3 bathrooms so goodbye privacy. People were hiding behind beds and doors when they were changing but eventually we all just gave up. Trust me when I say that I have seen enough aunty’s stomachs for a lifetime.

Drama
If you know anything about asian weddings, you know that they can’t happen without some drama. This occasion was no exception. My Khala aka. my mum’s sister and bride’s mother is a very emotional person and when the Nikkah (the closest to vows Muslims get) finished, she promptly passed out and I was the idiot who had to run to the guy’s section and get help. Then the crying commenced. It was like a chain reaction. The bride started weeping, and then her sister started which set my mum off and next thing I know my own eyes were wet.

The Rush
There were three events in two days and I was there for two nights. Everything was rushed. As soon as I arrived (literally as soon as I got my foot in the door), I was told to get ready and change my clothes but I was knackered and couldn’t be asked so I just stayed in my jeans. I eventually got the energy to change for the second event but I wore no make up. I sorted things out for the third though.
For the journey home, I caught a very early train back to London and because of the timings and distance from the venue, I actually didn’t sleep for 26 hours. It’s always been on my list of things to do before I die to pull an all nighter but I never thought it would be under those circumstances…

Language Problems
There were many. I speak English, understand Urdu but speak it to a below average standard whereas the rest of them are fluent in French and speak better Urdu than me. Basically there were three languages flying around the whole time and it got hella confusing.

Heels
I fucking hate heels. I wore them for two days straight and it murdered my feet. I genuinely limped home. Don’t do it!

Dancing
In case you don’t know, I love to dance… in private. I’m absolutely terrible but I enjoy practising my balle balle and Beyonce booty shake… in private…because you know I’m brown and dancing unashamedly would ruin my reputation. Now at any other wedding I would never be expected to dance. Come a family member’s wedding however and suddenly my mum is actively telling me to join in. Great! I’m sorry but I am not a closet professional dancer. Let me eat my biryani in peace.

I know this all sounds like a huge rant but it was a wonderful experience really. My cousin looked beautiful (though she won’t let me put up any pics of her yet -_-) and it was amazing to be part of such a Punjabi energetic wedding.

Without further ado, here are some pictures. More may be added later.

Note: If you live under a rock and don’t understand the title and first line, it’s from ‘Ninjas’ in Paris.

103. Back to life, back to reality

After the insane weekend I had in Paris, returning back to London felt surreal. I had been awake for 26 hours straight, my feet were aching from wearing heels for two days and I was exhausted right down to my bones. As soon as I got home, I ate some Coco Pops and promptly fell asleep for 9 hours straight. When I woke up I was so disorientated; I had no idea where I was or what time it was because my body clock was so messed. The first thing I did was check out what I had missed while I was gone and it was then that I found out that third year results were released.

To be honest I didn’t want to open them but I had to assess the damage. I knew beforehand that it wouldn’t be as good as last year and the ‘I don’t give a shit’ feeling that I had after the exams had faded by now so I was anxious.

I was… disappointed.

Don’t get me wrong. I didn’t do badly but I was so far off what I aspired. My New Year’s resolution was to try and get a First in every non-maths module (there are 7) and I got 3 (though one was only off by 1) and they weren’t good Firsts either. They were scrapes to the extreme but I’ll take what I can get.

My lowest mark was in Managerial Economics which is supposed to be an ‘easy’ option and to be fair my friends did really well in it but I thoroughly lack economic sense and I have a long standing history of hating multiple choice exams. I should have known better than to listen to other people. No more non-maths modules for me.

There was one module that I was particularly disappointed with; Games, Risks and Decisions. I really enjoyed the module and I felt like I had a good grasp on the content but I got a very average mark. It’s not unfair because I know I didn’t perform well in the exam but it’s definitely not representative of my understanding. Oh well…I guess it evens out. Last year I got higher marks in modules that I knew very little about.

I don’t want to be completely negative so I’ll share a positive too. I got a First in M3T: Communicating Mathematics which is the project I wrote after my exams. It’s one of those modules where it’s usual to get a 2:1, rare to get a 2:2 but difficult to get a First so I guess I should be pleased.

I might sound obnoxious complaining about a high 2:1 but I wanted to do better and I’m pretty bummed. I’ve never not got the highest grades and I really don’t want my university degree to be where I mess up. I don’t give a shit about how it’s good to fail sometimes and how it’s a learning curve. It’s going to be challenging to get a First overall but it’s still within my grasp (just about). I just need to pull out something special next year but it’s going to be seriously tight. I don’t think I can outrightly get a First but I can get in the grey area between a 2:1 and First forcing them to discuss my case and I’ll have to pray it goes in my favour. But that’s the thing, I’m now reliant on other people rather than my own merit.

I’m such a mix of emotions right now. I’m ecstatic for my friends who are graduating with amazing marks and I’m still on a high from my action packed weekend (which I will share more about with lots of pics later) but I’m kicking myself about my results. I haven’t told my parents yet because they’re still asleep. In a way I’m glad because I’m scared I’ve disappointed them but at the same time I really need some comforting words from my mum because I can’t ‘forgive’ myself until she does… though I’m not sure that’s the right word to use here.

But there you go. I was in Paris living the good life where my biggest worry was what necklace I should wear for the wedding and now I’m back in London smacked back to reality and I need to focus on my internship and university. Don’t things change quickly!

Over and Out!

102. Crazy Week!

I only have a a few moments to write this post. This entire week has been unbelievably busy! I have started my internship with Towers Watson and I’m working in the retirement department . I’ve just finished my first week and it’s been quite interesting. I’ve spent quite a bit of time in training sessions, using Excel, calculating transfer values, learning lots of new lingo and sending A LOT of emails. It’s so different from university but everyone has been so supportive and helpful. I’m not entirely sure what I’m doing half the time but I am getting there… slowly.

Tomorrow morning, I am catching the Eurostar to Paris for my cousin’s wedding. Half of my (very large) extended family is already there and the rest of them are travelling with us. There’s going to be two days of crazy parties and then I’m returning on Monday morning. I’m super excited about this. It’ll be great to see everyone in the same place and it’s an excuse to dress up and dance about like an idiot. I’m going to get my balle balle on. And it’s all happening in Paris- the city of lurveee.

Gosh isn’t this beautiful?! ❤ Please someone take me there one day…. *sigh*

Okay I have to dash and pack but I have loads more to say about the internship and I’m sure there’ll be a few stories from the wedding. Eeeee!

58. Paris Baby!

I’m going to Paris! Not right now, but in July, smack bang in the middle of my internship, for my cousin’s wedding. We booked the tickets today!

It is going to be EPIC. My cousin is the bride and she is French hence the whole going to Paris thing. This is the first time in years that a really close family member of mine is getting married. Weddings are totally different experiences when it is your family member getting married. You have more responsibilities but also a whole load more fun. You get to help behind the scenes, get everyone sorted and of course you’re allowed to dance like an idiot (this is normally frowned upon at other people’s weddings).

I have family all over the place and we’re all going to be converging in Paris which is basically a logistical nightmare. Everyone wants to go together but it’s hard when you have people from America, Scotland, Manchester and 3 families from London, particularly if they can’t agree on a mode of transport. What is even better is that all of us, yes ALL of us will be staying in one rented house for the duration of the wedding. I can picture it already… sleeping on the floor, arguing over bathroom schedules, not having enough plates for breakfast etc. There will be a good 20 of us living in this one house. It will be absolutely manic but that’s all part of the appeal.

My experience will be particularly crazy because of the fact it’s in the middle of my internship. It’s probably not great to be taking holidays (even though we are allowed two days off- I checked the contract) in case it affects my job prospects but my cousin will only be getting married once (I hope) and I really don’t want to miss it. Basically… YOLO I’m going. I emailed the company requesting the day off and it’s not a definitive yes but it sounds promising so we took a gamble and booked the tickets anyway.

I’m going to be going on a Saturday in the afternoon. The wedding is on Sunday and I’m leaving on Monday at half 6 in the morning. I am going to be sooo dead when I return. I can’t believe half 6 in the morning was the only train left on Monday,  almost 3 months in advance. Mental!

Eeee I’m so excited!
