139. It’s Ma Birthday

Guysss I’m 22- according to Taylor Swift I should be feeling happy, free, confused and lonely in the best way.

I think I’ll just stick to happy.

I’ve celebrated by playing Candy Crush obsessively (it’s becoming a problem). I’m on level 89 after 4 days (yeah I know late on the bandwagon). I’m even dreaming of those stupid colourful blocks bursting. Anyone else suffering from Candy Crush syndrome? If you don’t play, I suggest you keep it that way.

No but seriously, my real celebration will be to have dinner with my parents. We’re just about to head off. I fully plan on stuffing my face with yummy goodness. Party part 2 will be on Wednesday- I’ve having my uni friends around and we’re going to party like a mofo- by which I mean we’re going to watch Pitch Perfect and play Monopoly. Same thing right?

In terms of presents, my mummy bought me a very beautiful photo frame with pearly shiny stuff on it (anything shiny is a winner tbh). I just need to find a picture to put in it now…

64. Brown people at the airport

I go to Heathrow a lot. Usually I’m picking up or dropping off relatives coming from/ going to Pakistan and I’ve noticed a number of things.

– Before we even get to the airport, we do the customary weighing of the suitcases to find out just how overweight they are. Instead of putting the case on the scale, my dad always insists on standing on the scale, noting his weight and then lifting the suitcase and calculating the increase. Apparently this is more accurate… but you gotto feel sorry for the pour soul (usually me) who has to have their face against the floor (and near feet) to get the readings. *grumble grumble*

– You don’t need to look at the screen to find out which area of the airport you need to go. Just follow the masses of people talking really loudly (in Punjabi or Urdu) and you’ll soon find your way to the PIA desk.

– There may be 3 or 4 people actually getting on the plane but a good 10-15 people coming to see them off. This might make them feel special but to every other passenger, this is hella annoying. Why are you all congregated right in the middle of the check in? Why are you all in the queue if you’re not travelling?! You’re making the queue longer!

– Suitcases. About 70% of the passengers have suitcases from the 1970’s that look they they weigh a tonne and don’t have wheels. Even worse, some people just bring a hench cardboard box and mummify it in string. This is understandable if you’re taking something odd shaped abroad that won’t fit in a usual suitcase but most of the time it’s just full of clothes.

– The ladies are travelling in clothes that I would usually reserve for wearing to a wedding. How can you sit through a 7 hour flight in such heavy garments and make up? You are going to look like your face melted when you get off the plane. And heels too! You’re already struggling with your overweight luggage. Your inappropriate footwear is only going to this worse.

– The luggage is always overweight and not just a little bit, outrageously so.  My relatives actually PLAN on taking overweight luggage and create a ‘lucky bag’. This is a bag that they’d like to take but if it doesn’t go- oh well. They’ll wait in the queue and try and suss out who the most lenient check in person is and try and go for them. Then they will try and butter up the person behind the desk (I genuinely heard one man say ‘you’re looking very smart’ and the lady said ‘don’t even try it’).  One time we managed to convince someone to let us take an extra 15kg on board including golf clubs and other times we get the really anal check in person who is like hmmm you’re 1kg over, cough up. I have to add that nearly every time I go to the airport, I meet someone who wants us to check in their bag if we have room. The cheek!

How can my luggage be overweight? I weighed it at home!

– Every child is carrying their own body weight as ‘hand luggage’. Their parents are telling them ‘it’s only for a little bit’. I have experienced being that child and trust me when I say it is not a little bit and it canes your back.

– There’s always that one family that didn’t come prepared with a ‘lucky bag’ and has to open their suitcase in front of everyone and start removing things. What you notice is that they are filled to the brim with ‘gifts’ such as 5 packets of kitkat, a dozen cardigans from Marks and Spencer, Vaseline moisturising cream and random things like jam or baked beans which aren’t as nice in Pakistan. Hey…whatever makes them happy.

52. Presents Mania

Completely unintentionally, today ended up being a day of present giving. I love giving presents just as much as I like receiving them. There is an immense satisfaction in seeing someone’s eyes light up at the sight of something you bought. I’m probably just as excited seeing them unwrap their presents as they are. Gifts are personal things and I like to try and tailor them to people’s personalities and interests.

Onto the actual presents. The first was for my Mummy. She loves bags; every size, every type, every colour. I’ve had the same bag for the last 3 years and she’s had about 6. But hey she likes them so I decided to add another one to her (vast) collection. In particular, she’s been dropping (not so subtle) hints about Cath Kidston who is famous for her floral prints and oilcloth bags.

I went to the Cath Kidston store in Covent Garden and it was so hard not to buy the whole shop (but I’m brown and trained well not to spend any more money than I have to). Everything looks so cute in floral patterns. They have everything you can possibly think of: bags, purses, clothes, nighties, notebooks, plates, cups, key rings, cards… The downside was that they were bloody expensive. The plainest, tiniest cards were priced at an eye watering £3.50.

The second was for my friend Stefan who will be turning 21 soon but today is the last day I’ll see him before then. He always kicks up a fuss about presents. His birthday is on 1st April and the first time I tried to give him a present, he told me it wasn’t actually his birthday and refused my present. Don’t worry he accepted it later. He has a very…distinct personality. Let’s just say he could give grumpy cat a run for its money but it’s endearing in a weird sort of way….once you learn not to take him seriously.

I took great pleasure in wrapping his present in pink wrapping paper. I can’t share what the present is because he reads this blog (occasionally) and he’s planning on opening it on his birthday but I can tell you that it’s really cool!

The last present was for James (rather belated). I found a site called Red Bubble which sells t-shirts with all sorts of amazing designs. Run a search for Pokemon or Harry Potter and I guarantee you’ll be there for a good half an hour scrolling and thinking…want.. want…oooh… want. This one never fails to amuse me:

Also apologies for the lack of posting recently. I had a burst of crappy coursework which has been eating up most of my time *shakes fist*.

17. Presents!

I came home today, opened my bedroom door and found presents! This really doesn’t occur often. Don’t get me wrong, my parents always buy me anything I need but the idea of ‘presents’ and ‘surprises’ is not their thing. They must be more pleased than I thought.

There were actually several gifts including a new purse, woolly socks, a hat and a teddy bear (which has ‘I Love You’ on it’s paw!). Personally I think I rock the hat quite well, what do you think?

I'm so gangsta!

The best gift however was this…

For those of you who don’t know what this beauty is, it is essentially a baby frying pan. Not only is it so cute, but when you fry an egg in it, it comes out perfectly circular. AAAND because it’s Tefal (hence non stick), it means the egg won’t get stuck to the bottom of the pan. This pleases me to no end. No longer shall my eggs be shaped like Europe! No longer will they break when I transfer from pan to plate.

I have actually been begging for this for about a year and now I have it! My life is complete!

I will fry an egg soon and share the results with you. Such a cliffhanger I know…
