136. One Year Blog-versary…oh and a Happy New Year!

It’s been a whole year since my first post- half of me feels like the time has gone by so fast and the other half feels like I’ve always had a blog. What did I do with all my thoughts before ThreeMagical?!

I am very proud of this blog. I think it’s okay to admit that. This is my first ever blog and it’s still going (even if post frequency has been wavering). Some of the stuff I’ve written makes me cringe, a lot of makes me laugh (not sure it’s cool to admit I laugh at my own jokes) but none of it I regret. It was exactly how I felt at the time.

No-one viewed my blog for at least a month because I am an idiot and didn’t tag any of my posts and I didn’t tell any of my friends. What I did do however was write everyday and it was great because it helped me get used to my writing style and be brave enough to hit that ‘Publish’ button. The positive feedback I’ve received since then from my friends and all of y’all on the interwebz has been so motivating. Thank you.

With the end of 2013 fast approaching, I would also like to bid you lovely readers a Happy New Year.

May 2014 be a bright year for us all.

130. #Blogger Problems

I can’t be the only one.

  1. Spend three hours writing a post. 3 likes. Spend 20 minutes writing a post. 20 likes.
  2. Getting annoyed because the WordPress reader preview ends just before the part where your post gets interesting.
  3. Spend ages writing a post but decide not to publish that day. Re-read the next day and decide it’s crap.
  4. Write what you think is an amazing post only to read one by someone else on the same topic that is miles better than your own.
  5. Write an absolutely fabulous post. 2 likes. Read one on the same topic by someone else that’s not as entertaining as yours. 50 likes.
  6. Spend half an hour writing a post. Spend the next hour on formatting and deciding which images should accompany it.
  7. Write an awesome post but can’t for the life of you come up with a good enough title for it.
  8. Your post was viewed 20 times. No-one liked it.
  9. Asking a question to your readers in your post. No-one replies.
  10. You want to rant about someone but then realise you can’t because they read your blog.
  11. Always getting lots of ideas for posts when you have no time to write and then getting writer’s block when you do finally have time.
  12. Trying to avoid this: ‘Heyy how was the party/internship/cool experience?’ ‘Read my blog’.

109. Oooh an award!

I’d like to share some good news with you guys; I’ve been awarded the Versatile Blogger award by Joe at Confessions of a Technophile and George from [insertnamehere], both of which are awesome blogs (check them out!). Thank you for nominating me *runs around in circles*. It made me feel very happy and warm inside!

Similar to the Liebster award there are a few steps to this:

  • Thank the person who nominated you.
  • Put the Versatile blogger badge on your blog.
  • Spread the love and nominate 15 other people.
  • Post 7 facts about yourself

Righty I’m going to start with the 7 facts. These really are random.

  1. I have had crushes on animated characters including Yu-Gi (the Pharoah not the kid) and Flynn Rider from Tangled. I think there’s something about the hair…
  2. When I was a toddler I point blank refused to drink my milk unless it was in a big bottle and filled right to the top. Quite a madam at even a young age…
  3. I would like to be buried with my glasses on.
  4. I dance in empty elevators every opportunity I get.
  5. One week in secondary school there were cameramen filming some shots for a promo video to be shown on open evenings. I was filmed cooking an omelette but when I flipped it I got nervous and it broke (and I looked horrifed). Yeah they put that shot in the video. I’d say several thousand parents have laughed at my cooking incompetency since.
  6. I absolutely despise red varnish. It makes me think of hookers.
  7. One of my uncles once lifted me from my forearms and I dislocated my elbow. My dad told me put some ice on it. We only went to the hospital 2 hours later.

And my nominees are:

Emmajeanss: Insightful, interesting posts with a health dose of humour. Deffo ones for the girls!

Khinjarsi: a fellow university go-er and Neopet-er! She talks about uni, diets, jobs, friends and life. Sounds versatile to me!

Mitten’s Kittens: a blog about writing, jobs, and books with lots of thought provoking articles in between!

The Thought Buffet: random, brutally honest and amusing!

BULLSHiT: posts from several people on an array of topics. Really fun read!

The scribbling train: the scribbles and thoughts of an English Lit student on things from books to make-up!

The Gratitudenist: an almost eclectic mix of posts but that’s what keeps this blog fresh!

We Can Always Dance Tomorrow: a blog about music, being a woman and life!

I’d also like to make a special mention to  Omnia and Ibtehaal because they both have awesome blogs too but they seem to be on hiatus 😦

I know this isn’t 15 but I’d rather nominate blogs that I can actually really really like than add some that I don’t know very well. I’ll post on all of your about pages tomorrow.

For now I must sleep!

Thank youuuuuuuu

100. A Milestone

This pet project of mine has done pretty good I think. I like the size of my blog right now; not so obscure that no-one is reading it but not so big that it’s not personal. I am staggered that I’ve reached 75 countries.

There were a few moments when I wasn’t sure I’d reach this milestone because I was running out of ideas or because my life had been reduced to stressing about exams… but I’m glad I stuck with it.

In my about page I wrote some stuff about how I wanted a creative outlet and something to look back upon. Whilst both of these are true, the real reason I started this blog when I did was because I needed a distraction. I needed something to throw my energy into so that I wasn’t thinking about all the stuff I didn’t want to be thinking about. I’m sure that’s been the case for many of you fellow bloggers. And you know what? It worked. This blog filled a gap that I feared would turn into a black hole.

I no longer need a distraction but writing these ramblings have helped me so much that I can’t let it go. Looks like y’all stuck with me a while longer.

I will be mixing up a few things however.

  • Right now my posts are numbered regardless of how much content is in them. I’m thinking of only numbering posts that are a bit longer which will allow me to share shorter ‘updates’ without them feeling like cheap posts. (Should I start from 1 again? Let me know.)
  • Following on from my last point, I want to share more videos and short snippets.
  • When I get Photoshop back on my laptop, I’m considering making a banner. We shall see.

Over and Out! Thank you for sticking with me you lovely people 🙂

61. Liebster Award

I like to call the Liebster Award the ‘pass the parcel’ award which draws attention to ‘up and coming’ blogs. Once you’re nominated you need to reveal 11 facts abut yourself, answer 11 questions from the person who nominated you, nominate another 11 blogs and then pose them 11 questions. Quite a few steps to this…

I’ve been lucky enough to be nominated by the lovely Omnia which is very meaningful to me because (I don’t think she knows this) she was my very first follower. It’s a lovely feeling to know someone is reading your words and better yet, liking what you say so thankiess 🙂

So without further ado…

Answering  11 Questions

Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?

In the mirror. I kid. I kid. Career wise I hope to be an associate actuarist working in Central London living…comfortably. Personal life wise, I hope I’m happily married and a good mummy!

What is your dream career?

My dream career would involve mathematics, computers and people. I’m going down the actuary route for now and if I’m right about what the job entails, it should involve all of that.

What does you dream home look like?

My dream home would be anywhere my family is but if you’re talking aesthetics…I’d love a home with a great view, a library, a balcony, a mini cinema and a jacuzzi.

What’s your favourite car?

My favourite car is actually the Mini Cooper. The Italian Job totally sold it to me. I like that it’s compact, appropriate for daily life and looks good. I want to get a green one with white stripes when I can afford one.

 Do you play any sports?

I’m not very sporty at all but I enjoy playing badminton, rounders and dodgeball! I’m not good at any of them. I just think they’re fun!

Who is the most inspirational person in your life?

This is going to sound horribly cliche but I have to choose my mother. She is the bravest, cutest, squishiest, most dependable person I know. She is my moral compass and my walking, breathing diary. She keeps me moving forward and she makes me a better person. I love her to bits.

Who is you favourite band/singer etc?

I listen to all sorts of music and have a lot of love for everyone from Lana del Ray to Rihanna to Paramore but my favourite artist has to be Beyonce. I love that she stands up for women and she is such a brilliant performer. I can rely on Beyonce to cheer me up when I’m down and to get me on the dancefloor when I want to party. Oh and she’s sexy as hell!

What subject interests you the most?

Mathematics. In particular I like group theory and statistics. I love that there’s lots of ways to approach the same problem and still get to the same solution. I love that it’s based on logic and reasoning. And even though I complain about it, I love that it teaches me to think.

Do you like to travel? If so, state where’s the best place you’ve been and why.

I wouldn’t say it’s my favourite place but I had the best time in Egypt with JK for my travel scholarship. We had days where we just walked around Cairo taking it all in, days where we focussed on learning about Egypt’s immense history and days we spent on a felucca cut off from the world just floating down the Nile. Wonderful, wonderful experience. I hope to travel some more after my degree.

Do you have lots of casual friends or few very close friends?

I have always had a small circle of very close friends. I like having a select bunch of people that I can depend upon and similarly it allows me to really get to know them.

If you’d go back in time and change something, or do something, what would it be?

I’d really like to go back in time and meet both of my grandmothers. Both of them passed away before I was born. I have heard such wonderful things about them from my parents. I would have loved to have known them.

What is your favourite food?

My mum’s aloo gosht  (lamb and potato curry) is to die for! In terms of dessert, I’m a huge fan of Pizza Hut’s chocolate hot cookie dough. Om nom nom nom.

Over and Out Y’all!

50. Looking back on 50 posts

50 posts and 2000 views later, I thought it would be nice to reflect on my blogging experience so far.

I should probably start off my saying thank you to everyone who visits. You guys make this whole experience worthwhile. I hope my posts have been mildly entertaining.

How has it been?
It’s been really therapeutic for me to get things off my chest and I love having a way of remembering everything’s that’s happened to me. I’ve enjoyed it too. Some things have been really easy to write about whilst others took a long time to formulate. I find that rant driven posts seem to flow effortlessly. Clearly frustration is good motivation for writing!

Can I call myself a blogger?
Recently I have been feeling like one but I don’t think I’ve quite there yet. I definitely still feel like a newbie but if an interesting thought occurs to me, I have the urge to write it down and share it with you guys. If I see something funny, I take a picture of it. If something is thought provoking, I like to ask myself why I find it so. In general I’ve just been asking myself more questions and reflecting upon what I’ve been doing. That’s a good thing me thinks.

What have I learnt about myself?
I started this process thinking I was a mentally stable person but looking back on everything I’ve written, I sound like an emotional rollercoaster. My posts are erratic- deliriously happy one day and rant-y and frustrated the next. I sincerely apologise if I am all over the place like this in reality.

What have I learnt about WordPress?
Wordpress is amazing. There are so many fascinating people blogging and WordPress has helped me find some of them. I really enjoy reading about other people’s daily lives because it’s so different to mine. I’ve also seen a lot of amazing photographs and thought -provoking articles.

I am completely obsessed with the stats that WordPress provides. You can go full stalker on your visitors and see what they searched for and how they found you, where they’re from etc. I’m trying to ‘colour in’ the world map depicting where my visitors are from (it’s also a really good way of learning flags). Not bad so far:

worldmapwordpress

People have searched for many bizarre things and stumbled across my blog, including the phrases ‘rafiki onesie’, ‘mature shiny’… oh and ‘hench teenager boy’. How do search engines work again? But hey, I’m not complaining.
